Obesity strategy: retailers react

Mumtaz Ali, Mace, Edinburgh

Mumtaz AliI think the 2 for 1 has kind of disappeared already, its more a cheap unit price rather than a multibuy, a lot of our promotions have gone like that.

As for putting it up the back, how many products are you going to put up the back? It is ridiculous.

Rekz AfzalIf the government thinks that ‘out of sight, out of mind’ is the way forward, then small businesses will be affected, and a lot of shops would struggle and close down.

However, if they are concerned about health aspects, then it is something that could be trialled. It is always good to try things, as long as they aren’t detrimental to businesses that are already existing.  But I feel that it is intruding in what a business can and can’t do, when it comes to food that is perfectly legal.

Tarun ThaparI think it is going to kill the small retailers. I mean obviously the big supermarkets are hurting us left right and centre anyway.

We’ve had a lot over the last few years, with minimum pricing, the changes to cigarettes, that hurt us as well, and now it is just another blow. The councils keep putting rates up, it just feels like they are trying to kill small businesses.
