WITH incoming HFSS restrictions in Scotland now high on the political agenda, it’s certainly something more consumers in the country are picking up on.

Whether this is due to the impact legislation is already having down south or a general health push, stocking up on some HFSS-compliant options in snacking certainly wouldn’t hurt for plenty of Scottish retailers ahead of any potential legislation.

And Taylors Snacks reckons its stands ready to deliver here with its Lentil Waves range, offering a healthier option alongside some traditional crisps for those consumers looking for some “guilt-free alternatives” from the shelves.

Greg Smith, head of marketing at Taylors Snacks, said: “Growth in the better-for-you market and HFSS-compliant snacking requirements have boosted consumer interest in healthier options.

“We’ve developed a range of impulse and sharing size Lentil Waves, which are vegan-friendly, air-popped for a lighter bite and contain 60% less fat then other lentil snacks.”

Taylors is set to continue support for its Lentil Waves range throughout this year as well, kicking off with the addition of a new flavour in Sour Cream & Onion, coming in a conveniently sized format to offer greater flexibility to consumers’ snacking needs.

Smith said: “These are now available in 25g packs, which are perfect for impulse snacking on-the-go.”

SCOTTISH food producer Lightbody Ventures (LBV) reckons its recently launched Bliss Crispy Mallow demonstrates the firm’s commitment to providing healthy options.

Glasgow-based LBV says the new bar is compliant with English HFSS regulations, contains 30% less sugar than leading brands, has less than 70kcal per bar and is gluten-free. The 95g pack, containing five 19g bars, has an RRP of just £1.

LBV head of sales Ross Henderson said: “Our ambition with Bliss Crispy Mallow was to create a great-tasting bar for all the family that not only offers value for money but also complies with stringent HFSS guidelines.

“This project posed challenges but was incredibly exciting. We take immense pride in the results we achieved in just five months – from conceptualisation to the finished product.”

And the bar is arriving at the right time for retailers, as LBV product & technical director Dr Maryam Afrasiabi noted: “As reflected in the latest Mintel figures, in the UK there is a notable surge in demand for healthy snacks.”
