Scottish Grocer has recognised the strengths of women across the convenience retail industry as part of International Women’s Day celebrations this year.

ACTION for equality must be a collective move, and it must come quickly.

According to data from the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 to reach full gender parity – a much too slow result.

The benefits of true gender equality shouldn’t just be felt by generations to come, they should come today. That’s why the International Women’s Day organisation has set out its theme for 2025 as ‘Accelerate Action’, calling for swift and decisive action to forward the cause for gender equality.

The firm has called for more people to take action in addressing systemic barriers and biases that women often face, both in personal and professional spaces.

It’s with this mind that the Scottish Grocer has highlighted some true powerhouses in the industry who have plenty of experiences to share working as women in the convenience sector.

Their stories can highlight how, even today, women are unfairly treated in the workspace and how dismissive visitors to their stores have been.

Despite the hardships however, these women prove time and time again they can rise above the challenges – though this should not be necessary for them to do – and prove just how integral women are in this sector.
