POLITICIANS have been given an insight into all channels of Scotland’s food and drinks sector during a Scottish Wholesale Association (SWA) parliamentary reception.

Sponsored by Labour MSP Daniel Johnson, the Holyrood event featured a keynote speech by small businesses and trade minister Richard Lochhead.

It was attended by 120 SWA members and partner organisations, as well as more than 35 MSPs.

SWA chief exec Colin Smith told them: “We represent an industry that is literally the wheels to Scotland’s food and drink supply chain.

“Yet, until covid hit, we were a relatively unknown sector with the Scottish Government and across the parliament – despite wholesale being vital to food security and its supply into our local communities.”

He also stressed the wholesale sector’s importance to the Scottish economy and its transition to net zero, adding: “Scotland’s wholesale marketplace is now worth around £3.3billion.”

Smith also thanked MSPs for agreeing to £20million of direct wholesale support grant funding during the covid crisis.

He said that had ensured members were able to rebuild a strong and sustainable local food and drink supply chain post-pandemic.

Lochhead told the audience: “Wholesalers play a vital role in connecting Scottish producers with retailers and consumers, ensuring everyone has access to fresh, high-quality produce.

“I am pleased that the SWA has been working with the Scottish Government food and drink team and trade bodies to further the success of Scotland’s economic wellbeing.”
