TESCO has launched its first-ever zero-emission lorry to make deliveries from its distribution centres to stores in city centres.
Claiming to be the first in the industry to do so, Tesco said its new zero-emission vehicle will be making deliveries to over 400 stores in the Greater London area. Plans are underway to roll out electric lorries across its fleet in the coming months.
The Renault Trucks lorry has a range of 130 miles and is capable of carrying the same load as the diesel truck it has replaced.
Tesco said the lorry will allows it to swap around 30,000 diesel-fuelled road miles for green energy, removing 23 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum in the years to come.
Jason Tarry, chief executive at Tesco UK and Ireland, said: “Together with our switch to electric home delivery vans and rolling out electric vehicle charging points for our customers, we’re really excited about the improvements we’re making across our business, and our transition to electric vehicles.”
