Clampdown on proxy buying of alcohol

THE Scottish Alcohol Industry Partnership (SAIP) has rolled out its ‘It’ll Cost You!’ campaign once again to deter adults proxy buying alcohol for underage children.

Marking the third year the campaign has run, the initiative aims to increase awareness of the consequences for adults who have been caught purchasing alcohol for someone who is under the age of 18. These proxy purchases can results in a fine, imprisonment or both.

Luke McGarty, chair of the SAIP campaigns group and head of policy and public affairs at the Scottish Grocers’ Federation, said: “Retailers are, essentially, the first line of defence.

“Reducing underage drinking and anti-social behaviour linked to alcohol is something we support and ties in with SGF’s position of promoting responsible community retailing.”
