Vaping ban in debate

A BAN on disposable vapes is being considered by the Scottish Government.

Currently in review stages led by Zero Waste Scotland, health secretary Humza Yousaf told MSPs that plans for a ban on single-use vapes was being considered by ScotGov.

The news follows on from Waitrose’s announcement on 3 January of a “complete withdrawal from the single use vapes market”, as the supermarket stated it aimed to reduce its impact on the planet.

While the ban consideration has been welcomed by environmental groups, industry members have pointed out there is a much wider conversation to be had on the recyclability of disposable vapes.

John Dunne, director general at the UK Vaping Industry Association, said: “Earlier this year, the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment alluded to uncertainty around whether regulations covered the type of batteries found in vapes and also questioned the recycling infrastructure in place to support the sector to be more sustainable.

“This is why we are working hard as an industry to find a waste management solution that minimises the impact of vapes on the environment, particularly when it comes to single-use disposables, so they are seen for what they do best – helping adult smokers kick their habits and saving the lives of millions as well as millions of pounds for the health service.”
