Shake up bakery aisles with Little Big Cake bento boxes

SPECIALITY bakery manufacturer, Finsbury Food Group, is set to shake up the cake category with its first ever ‘bento box’ style brand, Little Big Cake.
Marking the first cake-only bento box to hit supermarket shelves in the UK, according to Finsbury, the new launch is exclusive to Tesco stores for 12 weeks from 19 January.
The first launch for the new brand is the ‘Paint the Town Red Velvet’ Little Big Cake and is aimed at millennial and gen z shoppers and features one big cake with a soft, velvety sponge layered with raspberry jam and topped with a tangy cream cheese frosting and flurry of funfetti sprinkles. The large cake serves eight and comes with four mini red velvet cupcakes, crowned with cream cheese frosting and a drizzle of jam.
The full package retailers for £14 and weighs 740g, providing shoppers with a unique way to involve friends and family in celebrations through the gifting option.
Kimberly Curtis, brand manager at Finsbury, said: “Little Big Cake is all about spreading joy, it started with a simple thought: a little cake can make a big moment. We’ve seen a rise in smaller occasion moments among consumers, and we wanted to create a cake that was perfect for this.
“Whether that’s a well done, a Happy Birthday, a girls’ night in or even a ‘just because’ to brighten an ordinary day.”
Bento box-style cakes have been building momentum in the independent bakery scene as of late, according to Finsbury, but come at a premium as they are made to order. Finsbury believes it has identified this gap in the market and aims to provide an alternative gifting idea for occasions and save consumers some cash in the process with a cake bento box that can be picked up as part of the weekly shop.
This new brand will also give Finsbury more flexibility to respond more quickly to consumer trends and innovate with flavour profiles across the seasons, bringing more excitement to the cake category.
Ross Lowery-Heywood, development innovation manager at Finsbury, said: “This launch reinforces Finsbury’s ambition to lead in bakery innovation.
“We want to be first to market, bring new ideas to shelves and excite shoppers with products that reflect changing tastes and lifestyles.”
