Scotmid Co-op has unveiled new plans to introduce a digital transformation across its estate of stores, to improve workflow through new retail technology.

LEADING Scottish convenience retail chain Scotmid Co-op is set to drive a new in-store digital transformation to modernise its estate.

Following a multi-million pound investment, Scotmid is set to introduce new hardware and software enhancements across its stores, including new tills, printers, scanners, new customer screens and assisted checkouts.

Margeret Anne Clark, chief operating officer (services) at Scotmid Co-op, said: “Digital transformation continues to play a pivotal role in the evolution of the retail industry.

“We’re so excited to be launching this major programme of enhancements for the benefit of our store colleagues and customers, to create a seamless, efficient and modern shopping experience.”

The work is set to be rolled out across Scotmid’s Food and Semichem stores and is being delivering by retail tech firm Pan Oston Holding. With over 50 years of experience in the field, Oston are renowned for implementing efficient and cost-saving technology across the channel to help improve on the overall customer experience.

In particular, Scotmid says the introduction of new assisted checkouts is part of its broader strategy to respond to a growing customer preference for convenience and flexibility in their shop. The retail chain said the new checkouts will help to reduce waiting times for shoppers, increase transaction efficiency and streamline the overall process.

Scotmid has invested over £3.5million towards this project, and all of its stores will see new up-to-date tills introduced over the course of the next year, with the programme of works scheduled to finish in late 2025. Select stores will also receive new assisted checkouts.

Ralf Hovenga, chief executive at Pan Oston Holding, said: “We are delighted to add Scotmid to our portfolio of businesses adopting this technology into their stores.

“From experience, we know it makes a positive impact on the way people shop and provides several efficiencies for staff, giving them more time to focus on customers.”
