SCOTTISH bakery firm McGhee’s has unveiled a trio of new sponge cakes which have tolled out exclusively to Tesco stores across Scotland.

Aiming to deliver a more affordable range of sharing treats beyond traditional celebration cakes, the new range consists of a Victoria Sponge, Lemon Sponge and Toffee Sponge variants.

Aisling McGhee, commercial director at McGhee’s Bakery, said: “Over the past few years we’ve seen growing demand for products that sit between an everyday treat and a special occasion cake.

“People are still looking for opportunities to gather and share food, but those occasions are increasingly informal. Whether it’s visiting family, having friends’ round for a cup of tea or taking something into the office, consumers are looking for products that feel a little bit special without being tied to a birthday or major celebration.

“When developing the range, we wanted to create cakes that delivered on both quality and value. The result is a soft, generously sized sponge cake that can be shared easily, offers flexibility on portion size and delivers the kind of homemade taste people expect from McGhee’s.”

Each pack comes with an RRP of £3.50 and marks a new product from the family-run bakery firm, following on from the firm’s new individually wrapped Empire Biscuits which joined the Tesco meal deal range earlier this year.

The cakes come in a larger square format designed for slicing and sharing out to cater towards changing consumer habits as shoppers continue to seek out more affordable cake options across bakery sector.

Barry O’Donnell, Tesco buying manager, said: “We’re seeing growing demand from shoppers for products that can be enjoyed as part of everyday occasions rather than just major celebrations.

“Whether it’s visiting family, hosting friends or simply picking up something to share at the weekend, consumers are increasingly looking for accessible treats that offer quality and value.

“McGhee’s has a strong heritage in Scotland and these new sponge cakes bring together familiar flavours, generous portions and a price point that we believe will resonate with our customers.”
