Opportunity to highlight Scottish drinks firms

Retailers can make the most of local producers ahead of Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight

With a variety of new products and listings across whisky, RTD cocktails and beers, there are plenty of opportunities for retailers to be patriotic about the provenance of what they sell ahead of September’s Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight.

Here, Scottish Grocer highlights developments from the Glasgow Distillery, BrewDog Distilling Co.’s Wonderland Cocktails and Bellfield Brewery.

The Glasgow Distillery has debuted two additions to its experimental single malt Small Batch Series.

Aiming to highlight the versatility of the whisky spirit, the launches consist of Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish and Glasgow 1770 Tokaji Cask Finish – which is a Hungarian wine cask.

Both expressions have been matured for six years and mark the first age statements in the Small Batch Series.

Both have an RRP of £59 per bottle, with the Cognac cask at 58% ABV and 54.8% ABV for the Tokaji cask.

Mike Hayward, co-founder of The Glasgow Distillery, said: “These expressions benefit from extended secondary maturations, showcasing the expertise in cask management among the team we have here at The Glasgow Distillery.

“Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish combines three unpeated Cognac casks with two peated casks for a lightly peated release.

“Glasgow 1770 Tokaji Cask Finish showcases our fruit-forward unpeated single malt with a rare Hungarian sweet wine cask influence.”

Wonderland Cocktails, part of BrewDog Distilling Co, has unveiled five new ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails in its range.

Bringing the total selection up to 10 cocktails now, the five latest cocktails are a Cosmo, Long Island Iced Tea, Strawberry Daiquiri, Watermelon Margarita and Whisky Sour. All are available for purchase now from the BrewDog website with a price of £3.90 per can.

Steven Kearsley, managing director at BrewDog Distilling Co, said: “We launched Wonderland Cocktail Co. in October 2023 and, since then, we’re achieved over 3,000 new distribution points for our bar-quality canned cocktail range.

“A few months back, we ran a poll on Instagram giving people the chance to vote for the serves they want to join the range – and we’ve responding by making them.

“From our absolutely divine Strawberry Daiquiri, made with our own Duo White Rum, to our fan-favourite Long Island Iced Tea, we’re delighted to unleash five new SKUs into the market, each packing full-strength ABVs and made using our spirits.”

Independent Scottish brewery Bellfield has secured new listings in Asda stores for three of its 330ml canned range of beers.

The three products – Lawless Village IPA, Bohemian Pilsner and Mega City IPA – will be rolling out to 40 of the supermarket’s stores across Scotland.

The new listings aim to cater to those drinkers with dietary requirements, offering them a vegan and gluten-free brew to enjoy across the shelves. Bellfield Brewery is also recognised as the UK’s first gluten-free brewery.

Alistair Brown, founder and chief executive at Bellfield Brewery, said: “We are delighted to partner with Asda to launch our products into Scottish stores.

“Here at Bellfield, we believe that great tasting beer should be available for everyone, so it’s exciting to see our products hit the shelves of such a major retailer. Our company mission is simple – to produce exceptionally tasty beers that everyone can enjoy, and it’s great to have Asda on board with us as part of that mission.”
