Regulatory requirements set out for DRS containers

ADMINISTRATOR for the UK deposit return scheme (DRS) Exchange for Change has confirmed the logo regulatory requirements for all in-scope containers.
The not-for-profit body, that has been appointed to design and deliver Scotland, England and Northern Ireland’s DRS in time for October 2027, has published its new Regulatory Requirements for the scheme logo for drinks manufacturers.
The document, which can be viewed here, has laid out the requirements on how the DRS logo must be displayed across containers and how it can be used alongside or instead of existing on-pack recycling labels.
The DRS Logo Regulatory Requirements set out include:
• How the DRS logo must be clearly displayed on every in-scope container, with options explained for portrait or landscape on-pack orientation.
• Minimum and maximum size specifications and clear space rules.
• Approved colour formats and production guidance.
• The process for any future withdrawal or replacement of the DRS logo.
Full technical artwork files are also available in a range of print and digital-ready formats to support the packaging updates for manufacturers.
Russell Davies, chief executive at Exchange for Change, said: “The scheme logo is visual shorthand for how the deposit return scheme works. From October next year, people will see this icon on every in-scope bottle and can across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The consistency of the DRS logo matters, as it will build recognition and help to drive behaviour change in recycling.
“Publishing the approved Regulatory Requirements gives drinks producers the clarity they need to plan artwork cycles and packaging updates with confidence. We’re focused on giving industry time, certainty and support as we move towards launch.”
