AN EXTRA bank holiday Monday has been confirmed for Scotland to allow businesses across the country to make the most of Scotland’s first appearance in the Fifa World Cup since 1998.

The holiday, set to take place on Monday 15 June, was first proposed by First Minister John Swinney to allow people across Scotland to celebrate after the team’s opening game against Haiti.

Swinney said: “We want to make the most of Scotland’s participation in this global sporting event by ensuring people have the opportunity to come together and celebrate – no matter the outcome of the match. That is why I proposed making the Monday following our opening game in Boston a national bank holiday.

“I am very grateful to His Majesty King Charles for approving the proposal and I encourage employers around the country to work with staff to put in place suitable arrangements that will allow as many of them as possible to join in the celebrations.”

With Scotland’s first kick off set for 2am UK time, the additional bank holiday will encourage shoppers to get into the spirit and support the national team on a global stage for the first time in 28 years.

This could also be a strong opportunity for store owners to bolster their sales for the weekend and bring more shoppers to categories including soft drinks, off-trade and snacks.

David Lonsdale, director of the Scottish Retail Consortium, said: “Scotland’s qualification for the Mens World Cup finals for the first time in almost 30 years is a remarkable achievement.

“The Bank Holiday on the 15 June gives retailers selling electronics, sportswear, merchandise and souvenirs, and food and drink a great opportunity to kick off a bright summer of shopping for Scottish stores.

“Hopefully the team can give fans something to celebrate and keep the excitement going deep into the tournament.”
