DRS takes a step forward

[L-R] Gordon McGuigan, Bill Power, John Player and Donald McCalman have been appointed to roll out the UK’s upcoming deposit return scheme (DRS).

A NEW Scotland-based consultancy agency has been appointed to introduce the UK’s upcoming deposit return scheme (DRS).

The newly appointed DRS International comprises of a team of executives and delivery experts who have been tasked to help guide companies towards the DRS deadline of October 2027.

The team has been put together by executive chairman Bill Power, who has already advised on the roll out of DRS in five different countries.

Further to this, the chief executive of DRS International is Donald McCalman, former programme director of Circularity Scotland – the now defunct scheme administrator for Scotland’s DRS which fell into liquidation following the postponement of the scheme in the country.

DRS International will offer firms outsourcing and consultancy solutions in relation to DRS as well as IT expertise, to help ensure the scheme will be introduced smoothly.

Power said: “For many years, the cost of dealing with the environmental impact of products and packaging has been borne by society and is not included in the cost of manufacture to the producer.

“DRS International aims to guide operators – who are typically appointed by producers – from initial design to performance improvement and from technical consultancy to implementation. I hope to measure the impact of my career by the hundreds of billions of containers that will be recycled by schemes advised by DRS International in the future.”
