Small Batch Series works with wine cask finishes

CENTRAL belt distiller The Glasgow Distillery has announced three limited-edition single malt whiskies that have all been finished in rare wine casks.
Marking the latest additions to the Glasgow 1770 Small Batch Series, the trio of tipples help to showcase the brand’s commitment to experimentation within whisky and how diverse its single malt range is.
Comprising of one peated and two unpeated expressions, all three of the five-year-old single malts have undergone a one year and 10 months finish in distinctive wine casks to deliver bold and unique flavours.
The first of these is the Glasgow 1770 Constantia Wine Cask Matured whisky, offering consumers an unpeated single malt that has been finished in South African Constantia dessert wine casks.
This maturation brings with it notes of fresh apricot, peach, pink grapefruit, clementine, rich manuka honey and dark chocolate to help complement the spirit’s fruit forward character. Bottle at 56.6% ABV, only 980 bottles of the Constantia Wine Cask Matured is available.
The second unpeated expression is the Glasgow 1770 Syrah Wine Cask Matured, offering consumers a more jammy influence from Greek Syrah Wine casks.
Sourced from the island of Evia, the influence of the Syrah wine cask brings in deep notes of blackberry, raspberry, strawberry jam, black cherry, dark chocolate and pink peppercorn to strengthen the base whisky’s rich vanilla and caramel undertones.
This comes bottled at 59.3% ABV and is limited to only 652 bottles.
Finally, the sole peated spirit in the new range, is Glasgow 1770 Pineau des Charentes Wine Cask Matured and has been made using malted barley infused with a rich mainland peat smoke.
After initial maturation in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, the spirit was transferred into a French Pineau des Charentes wine cask adding in layers of toffee apple, maple smoked ham, walnuts, orange zest and floral green peppercorn spice.
This final bold expression is bottled at 58.7% ABV and comes with a very limited number of 303 bottles.
The three distinctive whiskies have rolled out across the UK and Germany and come with a retail price of £59 from the Glasgow Distillery website and at whisky retailers across the country.
The new trio of expressions showcase the versatility and experimental nature of the Small Batch Series from Glasgow 1770, with previous launches in this selection including sherry cask finishes, calvados cask finishes as well as a tequila cask finish.
Mike Hayward, founder of The Glasgow Distillery, said: “At The Glasgow Distillery, we are always looking for ways to push boundaries and explore new dimensions of flavour.
“These three releases showcase the remarkable impact that different wine casks can have on our whisky, bringing bold and gratifying flavour characteristics.
“Having recently celebrated 10 years of whisky production, it seems fitting to release perhaps our most experimental whiskies yet whilst reflecting on a decade of innovation, craftsmanship and dedication to creating exceptional single malts.”
