ISLE of Skye single malt whisky brand Torabhaig has unveiled the fourth expression in its Legacy Series of malts with the Sound of Sleat.

Named after the narrow sea that runs beside the Isle of Skye Malt Distillery and the Sleat Peninsula on which the distillery sits, Sound of Sleat continues the brand’s tradition of crafting whiskies that evoke the atmosphere and beauty if The Misty Isle.

Torabhaig Sound of Sleat has been fully matured in different American oak casks, with new oak casks as well as ex-bourbon casks to help influence the final dram.

The resulting expression finds a refreshing balance between citrus and spice, a maritime saltiness as well as rich smoke evoking a beach bonfire in the spring, says Torabhaig. The malt also showcases the elegant smoke taste the distillery is known for and embodies the ‘smoke with taste’ philosophy that flows through each of its drams.

Torabhaig has also unveiled a new label artwork for the Sound of Sleat that has been designed by Skye-based artist Ellis O’Connor, whose vibrant work aims to celebrate the natural world.

The Sleat Peninsula has taken centre stage in this new design, with the artwork inspired by the beauty to be found there, with the whisky itself taking inspiration from the wild and rugged side of the island.

This latest dram makes up part of the brand’s Legacy Series, a collection of single malts that charts Torabhaig’s journey towards crafting a 10-Year-Old Single Malt and the experimental steps the distillery has taken along the way. Part of this series saw the launch of Cnoc Na Mòine in 2024 which took inspiration from the hilly landscapes of the Isle of Skye.

Neil MacLeod Mathieson, Torabhaig whisky maker, said: “Our journey to a 10-year-old expression continues and for Sound of Sleat we’re returning to a classic ex-bourbon cask profile, enhanced by the addition of a crisp spice edge from the new American oak barrels, without losing the elegance and intricacy our fans have come to expect from a Torabhaig whisky.

“There is still plenty of oak spice, citrus and maritime saltiness alongside a newfound waxiness we’ve discovered as our spirit continues to mature. This expression is a journey in itself as each wave of flavour washes in.”
