Asda has began its rollout of new forecourt sites with the opening of 11 new stores across the UK.

ASDA has launched its programme to convert 116 convenience stores and attached petrol station forecourts with 11 new sites across the UK.

These stores make up the first wave of conversions following Asda’s acquisition of the former Co-op sites from last year.

Moshin Issa, co-owner of Asda, said: “The launch of our conversion programme is an incredibly exciting moment for our business and accelerates our presence in the fast-growing convenience market.”

The converted Asda Express sites stock up to 3,000 branded and own-label products aimed at matching a range of consumer shopping missions including the top-up shop as well as on-the-go options for lunch.

The opening of the new sites follows on from regulatory approval from the Competitions & Markets Authority in June after Asda agreed to divest 13 of the sites to help satisfy competition requirements.

Stores have already opened across the UK with one site in the Birkhall area of Dundee.

The supermarket has also confirmed that the remaining 105 sites are due to be converted by the end of quarter one in 2024.

Andy Perry, who previously ran the acquired Co-op sites, has also agreed to join Asda as VP convenience and is set to use his extensive industry knowledge to support the supermarket during this ambitious move into the sector.

In addition to these sites as well, Asda is also set to open more stand-alone Asda Express stores in the coming months across the UK with three sites already open in Sutton Coldfield, London and Calne.

Issa said: “We look forward to bringing Asda’s great value in fuel and groceries to many more communities across the UK and to welcoming over 2,000 former Co-op colleagues to the Asda family in the coming months.”
