Asda sets up shop on its path to be the UK’s largest supermarket
ASDA has announced its ambitious plans to open 300 new Asda Express stores by 2026, creating 10,000 jobs in the process.
Aiming to introduce the supermarket into more convenient neighbourhood and residential areas, Asda reckons the new Express stores will cater to a broad range of customer needs whether that be top-up missions, on-the-go or buying ingredients for cooking a meal from scratch.
Asda said the stores will stock around 3,000 products, including fresh, ambient and chilled groceries as well as a selection from Asda’s premium Extra Special range.
In addition to this, the stores will also offer a host of hot and cold “food for now” options, including services from partner brand Leon, with some stores able to deliver via Uber Eats.
Furthermore, the supermarket said it aims to cater to the “food for later” mission as well, with a selection of ready meals, pizzas, stir fries and £10 meal deals for two people.
The 300 new stores Asda plans to roll out do not include the convenience stores the supermarket acquired from the Co-op, making them entirely new stores for local areas.
Asda’s accelerated plans come after it opened its second new Express store at Tottenham Hale in north London, as the supermarket noted the convenience market to be a key part of its long-term growth strategy to become the UK’s largest supermarket.
Mohsin Issa, co-owner of Asda, said: “With more than three-quarters of the UK population visiting a convenience store in the last 12 months, the potential for growth in this market is significant.
“Our ambition is to become the convenience destination of choice by providing shoppers great value and a comprehensive and convenient range of products and services under one roof.”
