TESCO stepped up support for food bank charities last month.
Between 30 June and 2 July, Tesco shoppers were encouraged to donate long-life food items in every large Tesco store across the UK as part of the Tesco Food Collection.
Food donated during the three-day period was then distributed to food banks under both the Trussell Trust’s and FareShare’s networks.
In a bid to encourage donations, Tesco placed pre-filled donation bags in some stores. Customers were also invited to round up their checkout bill to make a small donation to the charities.
On top of this, Tesco added a 20% cash donation to food donations made in store.
Permanent donation points were also introduced across every Tesco Express store in the UK and customers were given the choice to donate Tesco Clubcard vouchers online to either of the charities.
• Further support from Tesco was announced late last month, when the supermarket committed to offering free meals for children in its cafés.
Tesco is offering Clubcard holders free kids’ meals with any item purchased in 211 of its cafés.
Through the offer, parents can spend as little as 60p on fresh fruit to claim one free kids’ meal worth up to £3.25.
Alessandra Bellini, chief customer officer at Tesco, said the Kids Eat Free scheme is “just one of the ways we’re helping our customers to spend less at Tesco.”
