STORES in Scotland could struggle to cope with the number of glass bottles being returned through DRS, especially during peak times like Christmas and hot summers.
Industry body British Glass has warned that in-store reverse vending machines that are designed to accommodate 60kg of glass (about 220 bottles), would not be sufficient for peak demand.
British Glass urged the Scottish Government to reconsider its plan to include glass in a DRS.
Dr Nick Kirk, technical director at British Glass said that the association supports a scheme that “significantly increases recycling”, but added that under current proposals “this is not the case for glass.”
