FOOD Standards Scotland (FSS) has reiterated its call for brands to engage in calorie-cutting reformulations following the announcement of a new plan to tackle obesity unveiled by Public Health England.
FSS said it is “no secret” that Scotland has an obesity problem, claiming two out of three Scots are either overweight or obese, and the organisation welcomed the steps being made south of the border to remove excess calories from the foods children consume the most, with ready meals, pizzas, burgers, savoury snacks and sandwiches all on the health radar.
FSS chief executive Geoff Ogle said: “Food Standards Scotland’s recommendations to tackle Scotland’s diet-related poor health include the reformulation of food and drink products to reduce calories, sugars, fats and salt.
“We therefore welcome Public Health England’s announcement of a calorie reduction programme to be achieved by reformulation.”
