INNIS & Gunn, the Edinburgh-based brewing company which was one of the first firms to develop commercially successful oak-aged beers has bought The Inveralmond Brewery, in Perth.
The purchase comes after Innis & Gunn, whose beers are currently brewed at the Tennent’s brewery in Wellpark in Glasgow, raised £3.1m from investors in a crowd funding scheme called BeerBond.
The new owner of Inveralmond plans to invest substantially in the Perth Brewery and to create a new state-of-the-art Innis & Gunn brewing and maturation facility. The firm plans to develop both the Inveralmond and Innis & Gunn ranges of beers.
The Perth site will now be part of a twin brewing operation, Innis & Gunn founder and master brewer Dougal Sharp told Scottish Grocer.
“We will continue to brew our biggest-selling products at Wellpark,” he said.
“The acquisition is very much about brewing the specials, the small batch, the limited editions, the seasonals. And it will allow us to do a lot of barrel ageing in one site.
“On so many levels it’s the right strategy for the business. It gives us the capacity and scale of the big brewery in Glasgow and also the flexibility and capability to innovate at the small brewery in Perth. So, we’re in clover.”
The Inveralmond brewing team will remain unaffected by the acquisition.
“We’ve been friends with Inveralmond for years and I have huge respect for the beers that they make. Ossian, their lead beer, is available on draft at all of our Beer Kitchen bar-restaurants,” said Sharp.
