AWARD-WINNING Broadway Convenience Store and other shops in the Oxgangs area of Edinburgh face a major planning battle against a proposed discount supermarket in the fast-growing Aldi chain, around 100 metres from Oxgangs Broadway.

Linda and Dennis Williams, owners of the business, have vowed to fight against the plans for the supermarket on the site of a former social work centre and church.
Dennis Williams said a supermarket could threaten local businesses.
He said:“The bid is still subject to planning so that’s where the fight really begins.
“The convenience stores would be most affected, but if we’re quieter then the other shops will be as well. Less people coming into the precinct will have a knock-on effect.”
A spokesman for Aldi said: “We are very excited about the prospect of bringing an Aldi store to the Oxgangs community and the benefits that will bring to the local economy. We will shortly be announcing plans for a public exhibition and community consultation, which we will undertake both to explain our proposals and to understand any local issues and concerns.”
