- How long have you worked in Scotland’s retail sector, and what led you to your current role?
I’ve spent the last 15 years working within the fantastic retail sector in Scotland. I’ve worked across the full spectrum of retail – starting with a Saturday job to currently being in a trade & shopper marketing role within Swizzels.
- Tell us about your own success story, positive experiences, examples of leadership etc.
The biggest impact on my career has been that this industry is incredibly welcoming, with normal, everyday people seeing the value in working together to move retail forward in such a positive way, with the shared goal of making retail the best and strongest it can possibly be.
- What is the best thing about working in your industry?
The true teamwork and hardy spirit that emanates from everyone – from fellow suppliers and wholesalers all the way through to retailers – is something that really makes my job worthwhile.
This is an industry that has a genuinely collective sense of teamwork, with a shared vision and goal to make the sector a success.
- What challenges have you faced as a woman working in the industry?
Despite the perception that women within the industry face negativity, I’ve experienced an overwhelmingly positive welcome into the industry and throughout my time in my current role. There’s always someone available to answer questions or gain insight from.
- Who have been the most influential people in your career so far, and what did you learn from them?
Some of the most influential people within my career so far have been those who are tenacious, hard-working and have camaraderie, which makes it so enjoyable to work alongside them.
Swizzels is a family-owned company, so there is a real sense of pulling together and having a genuine care and love for the retailers we work with.
This has allowed me to translate the cherished values within Swizzels to my interactions within Scotland’s retail sector – where integrity, trust and passion are integral.
- What advice would you give a young woman starting out in Scotland’s retail sector in 2026?
Work hard and be open to new ideas. It’s important that you have a passion for the industry – this will make each day varied and enjoyable. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and speak to anyone and everyone – there’s always something to learn!
- Do you feel a positive culture in place helps you cement business relationships?
Having a shared and unified vision, with retailers being willing to share their vast knowledge, is the key to the continued success that the sector has experienced.
