Healthy eating initiative keeps Scotland’s school children fed

THE Healthy Living Programme (HLP) has marked a major milestone in its Welby Breakfast initiative as it has served more than 50,000 breakfasts to pupils since its launch in 2017.
The huge figure was marked at Coylton Primary School in Ayrshire on Thursday 13 November, where pupils took part in a special Welby Breakfast event.
To celebrate the achievement, seven pupils from the primary school joined the HLP team to mark the 50,000 breakfast and highlighted the team’s ongoing commitment to support healthy eating habits and helping young people to develop the energy and focus they need to learn and thrive.
With the over 50,000 breakfasts served and counting, the HLP team has renewed its mission to reach new communities across Scotland, inspire healthier eating habits and connect local retailers with more people across their communities.
The Welby Breakfast club connects young people with a local convenience store and showcase how these shops can offer a variety of healthier food options through a fun and interactive breakfast morning that is designed to help children better understand the importance of starting the day with a nutritious meal.
Kathryn Neil, programme director at HLP, said: “This is a huge milestone for the HLP team. Providing 50,000 breakfasts to children across Scotland is something we’re incredibly proud of. None of this would have been possible without the fantastic support of retailers, symbol groups, and wholesalers who make every event possible.
“The healthy eating message is so important, and for HLP to help create stronger links between retailers and their communities is vital. By enabling local stores to positively influence their customers’ shopping habits, we’re helping to build a foundation for healthier families across Scotland.”
