DUNDEE-BASED wholesaler CJ Lang & Son has announced that Sonya Harper has been appointed as the firm’s chief operating officer as part of a key leadership update.

With the ambition to further invest into the Spar Scotland independent store and company-owned networks, Harper has taken on the new role having previously held a number of high-ranking positions within the firm.

Speaking on her new promotion, Harper said: “Taking on this new role is a great opportunity to build on the progress we have made in recent years. Working closely with the team, my focus will be on supporting our Spar retail partners and stores to deliver the best possible service and range for customers.”

Harper joined CJ Lang in 2019 as head of central operations & process improvement and was then promoted to central operations director in 2020. She brings over two decades of retail operations experience to her new role, which also included senior roles at Scotmid.

Under the new structure, company owned stores director Frank McCarron and independent sales director Brian Straiton will now report directly to Harper, who will also continue to oversee the central operations team. Further to this, Harper will also take responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the business and will deputise for chief executive Colin McLean in his absence.

McLean said: “I am delighted to announce this appointment and congratulate Sonya on her new role. Her experience and leadership will strengthen our operations and support our retailers as we continue to focus on delivering for customers.

“While trading conditions are challenging, we are well placed to respond and drive the business forward in the months ahead.”
