FORMER joint owner of United Wholesale Grocers (UWG) Nabeel Ramzan has stepped down from his position to focus on his personal pursuits.

Both Nabeel and his brother Amaan released a joint statement on 2 May announcing the move, as Nabeel looks to take a step away from the business.

The statement said: “There has been a change in the ownership structure of United Holdings UK Limited. Nabeel Ramzan will be stepping down as a shareholder to focus on his personal pursuits.

“Amaan Ramzan, along with the remaining shareholders, extends heartfelt thanks to Nabeel for his contributions and wishes him continued success in his future endeavours.

“Likewise, Nabeel conveys his best wishes to the shareholders and the entire United Holdings team for the continued growth and success of the business.”

Both Nabeel and his younger brother Amaan have worked at the business since their teenage years and officially took over the running of the business in 2009 when their father Mohammad Ramzan retired. At this point, Nabeel was named the managing director of the firm.

Under the ownership of both Nabeel and Amaan, the business flourished and in 2017, the firm’s 40th anniversary year, turnover had risen to over £130million – up from £70million when the pair were handed the business.

Speaking on the news, John Kinney, managing director of Unitas Wholesale, said: “Following the statement issued earlier from Amaan and Nabeel Ramzan, we look forward to continuing our relationship with Amaan who has been a long-standing Unitas Wholesale board director and supporting him to continue the growth of the UWG business.

“We wish Nabeel all the best in his new business ventures.”
