Regional whisky distiller Mossburn has launched its new collaborative blend with the Normandy-based Calvados producer Domaine Dupont.

REGIONAL whisky brand Mossburn Distillers & Blenders has announced the release of a limited edition collaboration bottling of a 12 Year Old Mossburn blended malt finished in Calvados Casks.

Marking a collaboration between the whisky brand and the renowned Domaine Dupont, a Calvados producer found in Normandy, France and is world-famous for making the French apple brandy.

While both Mossburn and Domaine Dupont have both worked together for decades in different guises, this marks the first time the pair have delivered a collaborative whisky .

The Speyside blend was first aged for 12 years in ex-bourbon casks before a re-aging process in French oak barrels that previously held Calvados and Pommeau. The expression has been released at batch strength, 57.2& ABV, with an RRP of £65.

The resulting dram has tasting notes of a well rounded and delicate blend on the palate that gives way to a more subtle undertone of apple sweetness to match the heathery cereal notes of the whisky.

The release also marks the second in the annual Cask Collaboration Series for Mossburn that has seen the distiller blend and finish a different Scotch every year in a special cask finish. Last year saw the launch of the brand’s 12 Year Old Blended Malt Foursquare Rum Finish.

Neil Macleod Mathieson, whisky maker at Mossburn Distillery & Blenders, said: “When looking at collaborative efforts, one likes to turn to one’s oldest friends.

“Having worked with the Dupont family for 30 years and admired the deft touch with which they introduce oak to their Calvados, I was sure this would allow us to use their locally coopered casks to great effect on a Speyside malt finish, emphasising its typical heathery and floral notes.

“Even before casking, we were imagining autumn days and spiced baked apples – what a treat.”
