SPEYSIDE whisky brand Tamnavulin has unveiled the latest wine cask finish in its portfolio with the launch of the new Port Cask Edition.

Available in Tesco and Sainsbury’s stores now, with a further launch to Asda on 17 October, the new expression comes with an RSP of £35 and is bottled at 40% ABV. The bottle also comes packaged in a blue box, to help add some stand out on shelf for the brand.

Displaying a double cask maturation for the whisky this time around, the new Port Cask Edition is the latest single malt to join Tamnavulin’s core range as the distillery looked to improve on the success of its Wine Cask Editions.

The first maturation was in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels which Tamnavulin has said helped to bring in a “layered foundation”, delivering on delicate flavours of sweet biscuit, vanilla and hints of apple and pear.

The single malt is then finished in a second cask which held Tawny Port wine from Portugal’s Douro Valley. This helps to bring in a rich sweetness to the expression, says Tamnavulin, helping to deliver an accessible expression to consumers who are keen to explore further within the wine cask finish category of whisky.

The final result has been described as having tasting notes of honeyed poached pears, berry compote, dried fruits and creamy caramel on the palate with a nutty finish.

A spokesperson for Tamnavulin said: “Building on the success of its acclaimed Wine Cask Editions, Tamnavulin’s master whisky makers, led by Kirtsy Hodge, sought to find a partner to complement and elevate the characteristics of the distillery, leading them to the home of port.

“The result? A breathtaking whisky that delivers a sensationally balanced expression with intricate layers of rich fruit.”
