Both Checkout Scotland and the Edinburgh Kiltwalk have been hugely successful for GroceryAid Scotland.

THE volunteers of the GroceryAid Scotland committee have helped raise tens of thousands of pounds for the charity in recent weeks.

Checkout Scotland took place on 1 September at the BAaD in Glasgow, with the music event bringing together more than 700 industry colleagues and sponsors.

Independent retailers, wholesalers, Scottish brands and national supporters enjoyed an evening of networking, fundraising and live entertainment.

The crowd were treated to performances from headline acts Example, B*Witched and the Supernaturals, as well as DJs including George Bowie and Cassi.

Sponsors and attendees helped to raise £53,000 that will allow GroceryAid to provide financial, emotional and practical support to colleagues across the industry.

Jim Harper, of sponsor One-O-One retail and co-chair of the Scottish branch committee, said: “We believe we have created a unique opportunity for brands to promote directly to all channels of the Scottish trade. We are confident we can continue to grow this event with an even larger audience for brands.”

Checkout Scotland 2024 will take place on 5 September. Go to www.groceryaid.org.uk/events/checkout-scotland/ for details.

Hot on the heels of Checkout was the centrepiece of the Scottish committee’s JustDaeIt campaign – the Edinburgh Kiltwalk.

People walked up to 21 miles to support GroceryAid in its fundraising.

JustDaeIt was launched a couple of years ago, with supporters taking on various physical and wellbeing activities to raise funds that totalled £20,000 last year.

Campaign leader Christina Grant, of Mondelez International, said: “We decided to make the Edinburgh Kiltwalk a focal point this year and we had more than 50 people walking up to 21 miles to raise funds for GroceryAid.

“Donations are still coming in and we already know that we will exceed last year’s total of £20,000.”

Next for the Scottish committee is the Christmas hamper campaign.

Emma Thomas, of Sainsbury’s, who heads up the hamper project, said: “It’s a great way for firms to promote their brands to the Scottish trade. We are still looking for companies to get involved.”
