SHOPPER confidence has hit its lowest point on record, according to IGD.

IGD ShopperVista’s latest shopper confidence index, revealed an average score of -14 for the month of January, down from -9 in December.

The data specialist found 89% of UK shoppers now expect food prices to rise in the next year, the highest level since September 2011.

Rhian Thomas of IGD ShopperVista said the data show shoppers “spending more than they want to and buying less as a result.” Thomas added that less affluent consumers are being hit hardest by rising food and energy bills.
