ALDI is the latest supermarket to launch its first checkout-free store in London.
Customers who download the Aldi Shop&Go app can now visit Aldi’s trial store in Greenwich and complete their shop without having to scan a single product.
Shopping activity in the store is monitored by specially positioned cameras. The Aldi Shop&Go App then charges customers for their items upon leaving the store.
Age-restricted items, which are available in the Aldi Shop&Go store, are authorised through the app’s ‘facial age estimation’ tech.
Store staff can also approve sales manually if a customer chooses not to make use of the face recognition technology.
Lewis Esparson, store manager, said: “We have been working towards this day for several months now so it will be great to see how our customers react to the new technology. For us, steps like this are always about improving the customer experience.”
Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “This store utilises the very latest in retail technology offering Aldi’s award-winning products and unbeatable prices to customers in a new and innovative way.
“The team are really excited about seeing customers come in and experience Aldi Shop&Go.”
