Zero Waste Scotland research shows the need for more education as world leaders land in Glasgow for COP26.
AS world leaders arrived in Glasgow for the COP26 climate change conference, Zero Waste Scotland revealed consumers are unaware of food waste’s impact on climate change.
Research commissioned by the non-profit body found that 86% of consumers were unaware of that food waste contributes more to climate change than plastic waste.
The study also revealed that 63% of Scots think reducing plastic use in their home is the best way of reducing their carbon footprint.
Iain Gulland, chief executive at Zero Waste Scotland, said: “The sea change in attitudes to plastic over the last few years has been one of the most dramatic shifts in public consciousness around the environment we’ve ever seen. The same shift now needs to happen for food waste.
“Our research shows that most Scots think they are doing what they can for climate change, but the majority are unaware of the massive impact of food waste.”
