Co-op ditches plastic bags

Co-op bag
The new bags hold food waste

PLASTIC bags are set to be removed from the Co-op and replaced with a compostable alternative, as part of the firm’s strategy to become more environmentally friendly.

The lightweight, compostable carrier bags can be re-used as food waste caddy liners. They are currently being rolled out to almost 1,400 Co-op food stores across England and Scotland.

The changes will be made in a phased manner, with the bags initially introduced in areas where they are accepted in food waste collections.

New compostable bags will continue to be priced at 5p at checkouts.
