AS food retailers increase their product range, in a world where shoppers shop more frequently in a wide variety of outlets, they could find themselves using technology to protect, monitor and trace high-risk, high-value and perishable items.
Su Doyle of Checkpoint Systems, says radio frequency identification (RFID) technology can lower shrink, boost sales and ensure product safety.
For example when meat reaches a distribution centre, an RFID tag that’s encoded with lot code, SKU and expiry data can be added to the pack and a temperature log activated.
Then staff using scanners in stores can quickly determine whether there’s any expired or soon-to-be expired meat and take appropriate action.
