One year to DRS:What does the scheme mean for Scottish retailers?

This post contains paid-for content in collaboration with TOMRA

The upcoming UK deposit return scheme (DRS) will launch on 1 October 2027 and will transform how we recycle bottles and cans. Retailers in Scotland will play a key role in the scheme by charging a deposit on eligible drinks and operating a return point for consumers to bring back their drinks containers.

With less than 1 year to go until the scheme starts, retailers who plan now and choose the right technology partner can turn their new obligations into a real commercial opportunity.

A key part of that preparation is creating a returns process that is quick, simple and engaging for shoppers and store colleagues. Reverse vending machines help make returns more efficient and convenient, reducing the need for manual handling.

TOMRA, the leading global reverse vending machine manufacturer, highlights how retailers in Scotland can start preparing for the scheme.

How does a deposit return scheme work?

Think of it like buying the drink but borrowing the bottle.

A 20p deposit is added to eligible drinks. Shoppers receive this deposit back when they return their empty container, often via a reverse vending machine.

As announced by Exchange for Change, retailers will receive a handling fee for every eligible container collected, helping to offset participation costs and creating an additional revenue opportunity.

Automated returns: 5p per container (up to 225,000 containers), then 1.3p thereafter

Manual returns: 3p per container

Grant funding for independent retailers is also available from the scheme operator, Exchange for Change. The proposed grant level is £6,000 per site and is paid over 3 years.

How should retailers be preparing?

With less than 1 year to go, the message is clear: start preparing now.

“The businesses that act now will be best placed for a smooth transition when the scheme comes into effect,” says Sondre Henningsgård, Managing Director for TOMRA Collection UK.

“Retailers don’t need to have every answer today, but having a clear plan in place will make the transition significantly easier”.

Benefits of reverse vending for retailers

Reverse vending machines can help retailers save time, make better use of store space and create a smoother experience for shoppers. Key benefits include:

Space saving: Containers are compacted onsite, reducing storage requirements.

Time saving: Automates container collection, reducing manual handling for store colleagues.

Accuracy: Ensures eligible containers are validated and deposits are paid out correctly.

Customer experience: A quick and convenient returns process encourages repeat visits and customer loyalty.

When every square metre in the store matters, choosing the right reverse vending solution is key. The TOMRA B3 is designed specifically for convenience retail, combining proven TOMRA technology with a footprint of just 0.45m².

How a great recycling experience can drive footfall

Research by TOMRA has shown that 68% of shoppers choose where to recycle based on the quality of a previous recycling experience. For retailers, creating a positive returns experience can help attract and retain customers, with around 9 out of 10 consumers choosing to spend their deposit refund in-store.

The research also highlighted that recyclers particularly value:

  • Easy-to-use machines
  • A clean and tidy recycling area
  • The ability to return all container types in one location

By focusing on these factors, retailers can create a seamless returns experience that keeps customers coming back.

“DRS gives customers one more reason to visit your store. Choosing the right return solution is an important decision, and TOMRA is here to help retailers make the most of the opportunity.” says Sondre Henningsgård.
