Supermarket chain invests in convenience market

SUPERMARKET chain Asda has announced the launch of its new Asda Convenience concept as part of a new trial with One-O-One stores across the Glasgow area.
The new wholesale supply model for independent retailers marks the latest move that Asda has made within the convenience market as the firm continues to invest within the retail space.
Joseph Sutton, fuel & wholesale director at Asda Express, said: “Launching Asda Convenience is an important step in extending our reach and making Asda’s great value accessible to more customers in the way they want to shop today.
“By partnering with experienced independent retailers, we can combine our product range, pricing and supply chain strengths with their local expertise to create a truly compelling offer. This is just the beginning, and we see a real opportunity to scale this approach while building a broader wholesale business.”
As part of the trial with One-O-One, three Asda Convenience stores have opened across the Glasgow area including a newly built store on Croftfoot Road as well as the former One-O-One store in Glasgow’s Maryhill and the Murray Square store in East Kilbride.
Each Asda Convenience store stocks around 3,500 products including Asda’s own-label range and has been developed to support the wholesale channel.
Asda has said the new trial will allow the supermarket to refine the model in assessing how to scale it more widely across the whole of the UK.
Addtionally, the supermarket chain has emphasised the new Asda Convenience model is different from its Asda Express offer ans has been developed specifically to support wholesale partnerships.
Paul Stirling, group retail director at One-O-One, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be the chosen convenience retail partner to launch the new Asda Convenience format and to play a key role in bringing this exciting proposition to customers across Scotland.
“With a long-established presence in communities throughout the Central Belt, we’ve built trusted local stores that understand the individual needs of the neighbourhoods they serve. Combining that local knowledge with Asda’s exceptional value, market-leading own-brand range and strong customer proposition creates a compelling convenience offer that gives shoppers greater choice than ever before.
“We’re excited to see the first stores open their doors and look forward to working closely with Asda as the new concept develops and the opportunity grows.”
