Interview with Nathalie Fullerton, store owner of Go Local Dumbarton Road

How long have you worked in Scotland’s retail sector, and what led you to your current role?

I’ve worked in the convenience retail sector for seven years but, before that, I owned a flower shop for five years. I’m a people person and really enjoy meeting new people and getting to know them.

I didn’t know anything about being a convenience retailer and there was a steep learning curve. I was also pregnant with twins when I took on the project, but I’ve never done things by halves.

Tell us about your own success story, positive experiences, examples of leadership etc.

It was a bit of a rollercoaster. I was working as a police staff officer on night shifts and looking after the store by day. I have three small children and a husband who owned his own construction business. But I stayed positive, kept an open mind, asked for help and was keen to learn.

I relied heavily on my symbol group in the early days and then my retail brothers and sisters for additional advice. But it’s not just about me. I have a very strong team that I’ve built and we work collaboratively. I rely on them for their feedback.

What is the best thing about working in your industry?

The community that I’ve been able to join is one of the best things. Retail Family is an online initiative for retailers to have a safe space to talk about any issues, vent, gain advice or just chat with others in the industry.

What challenges have you faced as a woman working in the industry?

We are closing the gap but the industry is still very male dominated and there is still the disbelief that a woman can run her own business.

Who have been the most influential people in your career so far, and what did you learn from them?

I rely on other male and female leaders in this industry for advice, tips and ideas on how to continuously improve my business.

What advice would you give a young woman starting out in Scotland’s retail sector in 2026?

Go for it. Don’t give up and just always know that there are people out there who can and will help you. Be prepared for hard work, because it is hard work, I’m not going to lie. But it’s equally as rewarding.

Any career insights you would like to share?

It’s important to build a strong team you can trust. I wouldn’t be where I am today, without the support and dedication of my team.

If you are not willing to do something yourself, don’t expect your staff to do it. If you push yourself, you’d be surprised what you can achieve. Don’t doubt yourself!
