Interview with Jessica Lilley, senior marketing manager at Air-serv
- How long have you worked in Scotland’s retail sector, and what led you to your current role?
I’ve worked in the Scottish retail sector for almost six years, starting with Certas under the Gulf brand, where I gained valuable experience in forecourt operations.
I now work with Air-serv, supporting Scottish forecourt sites with their vending equipment.
There has been a significant shift at Air-serv towards improving the overall customer experience, which really appealed to me.
- Tell us about your own success story, positive experiences, examples of leadership etc.
I am very proud of the fact I’ve made good relationships to really understand business and customer needs.
I’ve worked for some great leaders, who have really supported me in getting involved with projects outside of my role. I have set up the marketing function for Air-serv and created a three-year marketing strategy.
- What is the best thing about working in your industry?
The people – the forecourt sector is very close-knit! There is a lot of experience in this industry, which makes it a great place to work if you’re eager to learn.
- What challenges have you faced as a woman working in the industry?
The forecourt industry is male-dominated, so fitting in can be challenging at first. But once I demonstrate my experience and knowledge, perceptions usually change quickly.
- Who have been the most influential people in your career so far, and what did you learn from them?
One of the first marketing directors I worked with at Argos really inspired me. She was an excellent mentor, giving me opportunities to shadow her and other senior leaders.
- What advice would you give a young woman starting out in Scotland’s retail sector in 2026?
Be yourself and don’t be afraid to show your personality. People genuinely value authenticity, and strong relationships are built on that.
I’d also say don’t underestimate yourself. Confidence grows when you recognise the value you already add.
- Any career insights you would like to share?
Say yes! Some of the most valuable experiences in my career have come from getting involved in projects beyond my core role.
