Morrisons closes cafes and two Morrisons Daily stores in Scotland

Move comes just after it launched Club 60 to offer older people cheaper deals

Chain claims some of its locations had ‘specific local challenges’.

SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons is axing its Cafés and two Morrisons Daily stores across Scotland.

The supermarket chain has confirmed the closure of 52 of its Cafés across the UK as well as 17 of its convenience stores.

This move from the supermarket also comes swiftly after its opening of ‘Club 60’ which offered people over the age of 60 exclusive deals across its cafés.

While the “significant majority” of colleagues affected by this are expected to be deployed into other suitable roles within the company, there will be approximately 365 Morrisons staff members at risk of redundancy due to this.

Glasgow Live has reported this move will see around 13 of Morrisons Cafés close up as well as two Morrisons Daily stores across Scotland.

Speaking on the closures, Rami Baitiéh, chief executive at Morrisons, said: “The changes we have announced are a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth.

“Morrisons Cafés are rightly famous for their great quality well-priced food, their place in the local community and their appealing mix of traditional favourites alongside exciting new dishes. In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges, and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option.”
