INNOVATIVE retailer Girish Jeeva’s 24-hour delivery service – the first of its kind from a convenience store in Scotland – has got off to a flying start.

The owner of Premier Girish’s @ Barmulloch, in Glasgow, started his overnight service on 6 February.

In its first week alone, the total value of sales was more than £4,775, with the total number of orders running to 186 and an average basket spend of £26.71.

Girish said: “After a soft launch, we’re incredibly impressed and even a little surprised.

“We saw 25 extra orders come in on the first night, which far exceeded our initial expectations.

“Our goal was to reach 20 orders in the weeks following launch and ideally achieve that target in about eight weeks.

“The fact we surpassed that on a traditionally quiet day, with a significant uplift in orders overnight, is a fantastic result.

“It strongly suggests there’s a real demand for this service and there are definitely people out there who will benefit from the convenience it offers.

“We’re optimistic and excited to see how these positive results continue as we move forward.”

The idea came about when he brought in a night-shift worker late last year to tidy up, fill shelves and check the prices were correct at his store.

Girish explained: “It’s totally changed the way we operate and the store now runs much more smoothly. I thought if I could have a second night-shift worker operating our Snappy Shopper delivery service, it would improve safety and help the night shift pay for itself.”

Girish said he had spoken to Snappy Shopper chief exec Mike Callachan about the idea and the delivery tech firm had offered a lot of support.

Premier Girish’s @ Barmulloch has a delivery area covering four square miles, with competition from eight other stores.
