A community-owned store in Cargunnock has reopened its doors three years after a devastating fire thanks to contributions from local residents.

A VILLAGE store in Cargunnock, in the Stirlingshire area, has reopened its doors following a three-year hiatus caused by a devastating fire.

Led by the remarkable efforts of the local community, who came together to contribute an incredible £65,415 to reopen the store, the new community-owned store will once again be able to provide a vital lifeline for residents in the area.

Some 259 investors contributed towards the project, with support from Nisa, and experienced store operator Ashok Pothugunta will oversee the day-to-day running of the store.

Speaking on his new venture, Pothugunta said: “I am honoured to take on the store in Cargunnock and be part of such an inspiring community effort. My goal is to create a welcoming space that caters to the local needs, offering a wide range of high-quality products and services.

“With Nisa’s support, I’m confident we can make this store a hub for the village.”

Pothugunta brings 20 years of retail experience with him to the new store, and also operates other successful stores in Falkirk, Edinburgh and England.

Over 250 local residents made a financial investment into the community-owned store.

The reopening in January was met by great enthusiasm from local residents, who now no longer need to make the 14-mile round trip for groceries.

The store, supplied by Nisa, will also feature Co-op own-brand products in addition to a wide range of local Scottish produce to help promote sustainability and support regional businesses.

Christine Phillips, chair of Cargunnock Community Shop, said: “The successful share offer and Ashok’s appointment are pivotal moments for Cargunnock. We are grateful for the community’s support and eager to see Ashok’s vision come to life.”

Andrew Rutter, head of key accounts at Nisa, said: “We’re delighted to support Ashok and the Cargunnock community in bringing this vital store back to life. Nisa’s wide-ranging offering, including the trusted Co-op own-brand range, ensures customers have access to quality and value.

“It’s fantastic to see how the community has come together to make this possible.”
