TESCO is the latest retailer to trial DRS, launching a pilot scheme across five stores.
The supermarket is trialling deposit return for plastic bottles in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Borehamwood, Manchester and Swansea.
Customers who bring plastic bottles up to 750ml in size to participating stores will receive 10p for each returned pack.
From 3 October, Tesco will also allow customers to use their own plastic containers when purchasing meat, cheese or fish from deli and fish counters in UK stores.
Speaking at the launch of the pilot scheme, Jason Tarry, UK and Ireland chief executive for Tesco said: “We are already committed to eliminating single use plastic wherever we can and make recycling simpler for customers. Today is another step in that direction.”
