Off-trade is in high spirits report finds

Gin growth continues at pace

Spirits are soaring in the Scottish off-trade according to the latest market report from William Grant & Sons.

Gin was the big winner in the annual report, with consumer demand for the juniper spirit showing no signs of slowing. Sales are up 26% in stores north of the border.

Other spirited success stories included flavoured vodka, up 22%; non-cream liqueurs, up 12%; American whiskey, up 9%; and malt whisky which enjoyed growth of 9%.

Overall, beer, wine and spirits sales in the UK off-trade grew by £618m over the last year according to William Grant, with spirits accounting for almost 40% of that growth.

Of that spirits growth, William Grant revealed that over 65% was driven by the gin category.

The market report suggested continued growth is being driven by shoppers entering the category, and more frequent purchasing.

By sector, the multiples continue to enjoy the lions share of spirits sales, with a total of £13bn for GB against the £3.6bn sold in convenience.

Both sectors were in growth, with multiples enjoying a 4.5% value increase for spirits and convenience experiencing 2.1% growth.
