Independent retailers who continue to use the traditional yellow PayPoint terminal are to be charged a new monthly fee as the payment services firm moves to phase out its older technology.
From 1 June, retailers using the yellow terminal will be charged a standardised £10 per month fee.
PayPoint has said the new pricing “reflects the costs involved in supporting these older terminals whilst allowing retailers to maintain the current terminals in their stores prior to our upgrade programme commencing if they want to”.
Retailers who wish to remove PayPoint as a result of the charges are able to without any termination fees as per the 60 day period outlined in their contract.
The yellow PayPoint terminal was launched 13 years ago, and the firm has said the equipment has become “more costly to maintain”, and includes features which have “now become obsolete and impossible to support”.
Lewis Alcraft, commercial director at PayPoint, said the firm“will continue to work closely with retailers to ensure that PayPoint services are supporting the growth of their business and helping them deliver a great customer service”.
He said: “We understand that the change in terms might not be for everyone which is why we are enabling retailers to leave our network free of charge, if they would prefer to. We do not believe in forcing retailers into partnerships that do not work for their businesses.
“The push to deliver the latest technology across the PayPoint network comes as a result of the demand from our customers and consumers for a more efficient service.”
