IRISH cream liqueur Baileys is 40 years old this year. It was created by David Dand, whose idea was to blend cream and whisky into a drink for export and home markets. The prototypes were made in a domestic Kenwood mixer.
Steve Wilson led the team of scientists that developed Baileys Original 40 years ago. Nearly 40 years later, his son, Anthony Wilson invented Baileys Chocolat Luxe which launched in 2013.
The original had a shelf life of a few weeks. Now a bottle lasts for two years.
It takes 40,000 cows, on 1,500 farms, to produce the cream used to manufacture Baileys.
More than 80% of the packaging and ingredients for Bailey’s is sourced in Ireland.
