Awards 2025 have completed the task
of visiting stores around the country and
interviewing some remarkable retailers
and staff.
The standard of entrants this year was
truly impressive and it has been a tough
task trying to whittle down the finalists
across all 12 categories.
It was clearly evident how passionate
convenience retailers were about their
shops, staff, the products they sell, their
customers and communities.

Best New Store of the Year
This award recognises the best new-build c-stores and the best major refurbishments that have changed an existing store and have introduced new fixtures and equipment.

The store layout has been thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of its customer base, offering a bright, spacious environment and an extended range that enhances the shopping experience. A strong local supplier partnership adds quality and is a big attraction for customers, while an impressive alcohol selection further strengthens the offer. Its location near a hospital, new housing estate and key commuter routes helps to drive both revenue and footfall. Consistently positive feedback from loyal customers highlights the store’s importance and suggests it will continue to play a vital role within the community it serves.

A striking store with an excellent layout, bright lighting and welcoming space that enhances the customer journey. The addition of a beer cave adds to its appeal, while the move from its previous location has allowed it to adapt well to changing demographics and stock requirements. Strong collaboration with a local supplier also brings added quality and choice. Plans are in place to extend into the neighbouring property, expand the fascia and introduce media screens for extra impact. With clear POS, effective in-house social media and sustainable fixtures, customer satisfaction, revenue, and footfall have all grown significantly.

East Lothian
An impressive store that stands out in the Premier estate, Premier Dunbar highlights the lengths you can take convenience stores to. The spacious layout offers clear points of reference, creating an easy and enjoyable shopping experience while allowing for standout areas such as an extensive wine range, a dedicated beer area, and quality food-to-go options. Collaboration with a shopfitting partner has helped create a venue that appeals strongly to both the local community and visiting tourists. With a strong social media presence, and a major refurbishment, revenue and footfall have doubled, earning regular customer praise.
Best Soft Drinks Retailer of the Year
Judges will be looking for stores that score highly on getting the range right, running impactful promotions and merchandising their soft drinks effectively.

Soft drinks are a key focus for this store, with a prominent and well-stocked range that covers everything from core lines to the latest category trends. The use of additional chillers and well-placed interruption points enhances the shopper experience, offering strong visibility and easy access. Whether it’s multi-pack promotions, two litre bottles, or drinks included in meal deals, the simplicity, variety, and value are commendable. The layout makes excellent use of space, with effective lighting and clear point-of-sale material guiding shoppers effortlessly through the range. It’s a well presented soft drinks offer that delivers both convenience and choice.

A key strength of this store is its impressive soft drinks cave, an emerging trend in convenience retail that transforms the store into a true destination for shoppers. It offers a wide variety of chilled drinks, catering to both on-the-go and take-home occasions, with options spanning zero-sugar, functional drinks, and the latest category trends. Promotions are clearly marked and well executed, making it easy for customers to navigate and find what they need. The store demonstrates a strong awareness of new product launches, helping to enhance the shopper experience, and shows a clear understanding of energy drinks with staff knowledge reinforcing safety.
Spar Renfrew
This store provides a strong central soft drinks focal point in-store, effectively showcasing a comprehensive range including core lines, energy drinks, water, vitamin drinks, juices, iced coffee, zero-sugar options, and the latest category trends. A wide variety of promotions are well executed across key interruption points, supported by impactful point-of-sale materials and effective lighting, all contributing to a positive and convenient shopper experience. The store also remains up to date with new product launches and features clear signage stating that energy drinks are not to be sold to under 16s.
Community Retailer of the Year
This award is split into two categories: city store operators and rural store operators and will go to the businesses that can clearly demonstrate how they engage with, empower and support their local community.

Baillieston
In Baillieston, Natalie and her team have built more than just a convenience shop – whether it’s hosting family-friendly fundraisers such as their pavement festival, backing local schools and sports teams, or supporting eco-projects like clean-up days and recycling drives, they’re always looking for ways to give back. After winning a major award, they reinvested the prize money into life-saving tools like a defibrillator and first aid training for the community. They’ve also tackled tough issues within the convenience community, with the creation of ‘retail family’.

For over four decades, Broadway Convenience Store has been a cherished fixture in the community, offering more than just groceries – it’s a place where everyone feels at home. Led by Dennis and his dedicated team, the store fosters wellbeing and social connection by forming meaningful relationships with customers and supporting them through life’s moments, big and small. Their commitment extends beyond the storefront, from partnering with the Healthy Living Programme to promote nutritious habits in local schools, to organising vibrant fundraising events that bring people together. Always ready to lend their time, expertise, and platform to local causes, the Broadway team embodies the true spirit of community.

At Bourtreehill Supermarket, community care isn’t just a nice extra – it’s at the heart of everything they do. From running free breakfast events in local schools to donating snack packs, Easter eggs, and even soft play parties for kids, Imran and his incredible team never stop giving. Whether they’re helping pensioners stay warm and fed with their Heat & Feed project, supporting local sports clubs, or pulling together festive events with reindeer, owls and Santa himself, they do it all with love. Their kindness extends right down to everyday gestures – like paying for someone’s shopping when they’re short, or simply offering a listening ear. It’s more than a store – it’s a lifeline, a meeting place and a shining example of what community spirit looks like.

Graham’s store is a true community cornerstone, blending business with heart. From raising thousands through danceathons and music gigs to running a free delivery service for vulnerable residents whilst assisting carers in the community, he’s always finding ways to help. Graham even offers a free humanist service to most loyal patrons and eulogies to those no longer with us. His shop doubles as a hub for local products, a digital access point and even a Post Office. Whether it’s supporting mental health, reducing food waste, or offering a friendly ‘be-friending service,’ Graham’s personal touch and dedication make a huge difference every day.
Independent Retailer of the Year
This award recognises retail businesses where the owner is directly involved in the day-to-day operation and management of the store(s) and is, ultimately, the main decision maker.

Spar Motherwell Road
Bellshill
Making the change to the Spar symbol has been one of the strongest moves that Spar Motherwell Road has made, says its manager. The store’s success can be seen across every aspect of its offer, but its most impressive has to be the Snappy Shopper home delivery service. In a month, the store generates close to £180k in home delivery sales alone, with an ambition to reach £200k in the near future, with between 200-260 deliveries made per day during its 24 hour delivery service.
Spar Renfrew
A stalwart part of the community for over 30 years now, Spar Renfrew’s modern approach and ability to keep up to date with the latest developments in the field has ensured it remains a must-visit convenience store for Scotland. Most recently, this has included the introduction of a new security system to help prevent theft across the store, to protect staff members as well as customers. And it’s the customers who reap the rewards the most here, as no matter how Spar Renfrew modernises, its tried and tested approach to customer satisfaction ensures its strength and will do for years to come.
The Filly West End Filling Station
Dingwall
A recent refit has introduced a modern looking forecourt to the Dingwall area, providing a wide selection of groceries and off-trade options for locals. In addition to this, the store offers an expansive food-to-go offer including a fully functioning kitchen to provide a wide menu for shoppers who come into the store. Despite its location in the Highlands, the store’s core consumer-base remains its local customers, with passing trade still present, but less so than residents.
Licensed Retailer of the Year
Off-trade is a category that needs careful attention. The Licensed Retailer of the Year award goes to a retailer who provides a great off-trade service and who markets this creatively and responsibly.

Glasgow
A new beer cave has provided for locals in the Anniesland area, whilst also protecting staff members from potential crimes. Aside from the wine selection and spirits behind the counter, the off-trade is almost entirely found within the beer cave, which is closely monitored to help reduce on crime whilst also providing some key options for locals including beers, ciders as well as RTD cocktail cans.
Premier Dunbar
East Lothian
The store owner’s status as a sommelier shines through in Premier Dunbar with an expansive and attractively showcased wine selection. Any avid wine fan will not be disappointed when they enter the store and are greeted by an impressive selection of wines that would not go amiss in the cellars of France. In addition to this, the store boasts a wide range of tourist-favourite spirits, local produce as well as a selection of options found in the beer cave.
Spar Hanif Drumgelloch
Airdrie
The introduction of a beer cave to the Drumgelloch area has been a welcome addition with locals and Spar Hanif Drumgelloch provides for its customers in spades. Around 30% of its business sales come exclusively from the off-trade with this store, and it employs the strengths of the Spar offer clearly across the store, with plenty of promotions in the off-trade to ensure shoppers get a good deal, whilst adhering to Scottish licensing laws.
Smokeless Alternatives Retailer of the Year
This award will recognise a retailer with a comprehensive range and in-depth knowledge of the latest nicotine offerings such as pouches, vapes and heat-not-burn devices.

Edinburgh
Day-Today Drylaw’s smokeless nicotine offer is developing, with a new display cabinet, supported by Adversity Vapes, promotions and in-store screens. Products are grouped in cabinets and positioned behind the till, with expanded options, such as nicotine pouches, set to be included within the section as shoppers become more familiar with the category. Staff are confident advising on refillable vape products and have assisted shoppers in setting up new devices, helping them to fully transition over following the introduction of the disposable vape ban.

A stand-out for its owner, known locally as the ‘vape expert,’ their vast knowledge of nicotine products and market trends allows them to meet customer demand and anticipate shifts. The store offers a wide selection to help entice customers to the store and solidify Nisa Kilbirnie as a go-to for local nicotine shoppers. Engagement is excellent, with a strong and highly active social media presence that keeps the community updated on new arrivals. The manager and staff also demonstrate confidence in guiding customers, helping some move away from combustible products toward smokeless nicotine alternatives. Their expertise and enthusiasm make this store a trusted local destination.

This store impressed with a comprehensive smokeless nicotine range, tailored to customer needs and kept up to date with trends and regulations. The store displayed products in an engaging, well-organised way, giving strong visibility to key lines and making the range easy to navigate. Social media activity, managed effectively from head office, ensured customers were engaged and promotional POS was highly visible in-store. Staff demonstrated a strong knowledge, confidently guiding customers through the journey while keeping them informed about industry developments. Their clear passion for the category creates trust, ensuring customers feel well supported and able to find everything they need.
Sustainability Champion
This award goes to a store who has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint, cut back on waste, inform shoppers on sustainability and encourage recycling in its community.

With a store refit that increased the store size five times over, you would expect a massive jump in the energy bills. But, this wasn’t the case with Londis St Michael’s Services who took to this store makeover with a planet-friendly mindset. The introduction of solar panels across its roof, light sensors that only trigger to motion and an efficient heat exchange system has ensured bills remained consistent even after the refit. Not only this, the store owner sought out the community’s advice in the refit, ensuring a shop that was fit for the area’s demands.

Dundee
Located in the heart of the University of Dundee campus, Premier @ DUSA makes it its own mission to be part of students’ education. Staff members work directly with the next generations to instil good sustainable practices as they come to sustain themselves for the first time. Further to this, sustainable stock across the shop is highlighted with small messages to showcase their planet-friendly nature and encourage students to make greener choices in their shopping.
Spar Market Crosshouse
Kilmarnock
Spar Market Crosshouse’s sustainability journey comes with plenty of digital upgrades across the store. Chillers are fitted with energy efficient doors and lights across the off-trade’s fridges are turned off outside of curfew hours; the store makes use of electronic shelf edge labels to help cut back on paper wastage; and its reverse vending machine still takes in plenty of single-use containers, with help from the local kids. In fact, it's these very customers who are shouting out about sustainability the most, with hand-drawn art across the store encouraging more adults to care for the planet.
Symbol Store of the Year
This award is split into two categories: Single Store Operator and Multiple Stores Operator and is awarded to retailers who encompass the strengths of their symbol while creating unique selling points for their customers.

Day-Today Anniesland showcases the future of the United Wholesale Scotland store estate. Being the first store in Scotland to benefit from its digital upgrade, Day-Today Anniesland boasts a fresh and modern look, complete with gadgets that are designed to drive up footfall and increase sales across the store. The highlight of this is the Spin to Win touchscreen in store, which invites shoppers to come in and spin a digital wheel for their chance to win a free prize.
One Stop Rosyth
Fife
This recently refitted store highlights how a retailer’s savvy approach can ensure that their local customers can benefit from a symbol’s best benefits. One Stop Rosyth makes excellent use of both digital improvements as well as the access to Tesco’s stockroom, providing own-label products as well as local produce options to shoppers and One Stop’s MyStop online training platform for staff members. This ensures a high quality is maintained across the store, whilst allowing the store owner to support his local customers.

Ayrshire
Londis Dalmellington has seen an increase of footfall since its refit, with plenty of shoppers attracted to its new food-to-go options as well as the attractively presented beer cave, bringing in between 1500 to 2000 customers per week. These new introductions have helped to drive up turnover at this forecourt store, doubling the overall figures since the store reopened. The store also makes use of ample Booker promotions across the store, through end-of-bay displays as well as specific promotional bins.
Highland Fuels, Balfron Filling Station
Stirlingshire
The introduction of Morrisons Daily Balfron Filling Station was a much shouted for demand in the local area. Providing shoppers with a forecourt offer of four pumps for fuel as well as 24 car spaces, the store found on the forecourt provides shoppers with a vast array of options to choose from. This has saved many consumers from travelling further out to find a local supermarket store. Alongside this, the store has provided plenty of work opportunities for young people in the local area.
The Innovation Award
This award goes to a store that has shown new thinking and an imaginative application of technology, improving the service offered to it's customers and boosting commercial results.

A recent refurbishment drove a 30% sales increase, supported by digital display screens promoting real-time deals. The store blends high-tech solutions with community values, enhancing accessibility through automatic doors, ramps, and spacious aisles – offering an inclusive, forward-thinking shopping experience that respects tradition while embracing the future.

At Girish’s Premier, innovation fuels every aspect of the business. The store employs a cutting-edge facial recognition CCTV system to curb theft and antisocial behavior, while pioneering one of Scotland’s first 24/7 home delivery services. A sophisticated loyalty program uses advanced data analytics to personalise offers and increase customer loyalty. Remote management from India is enabled through smart technology investments. Additionally, AI supports both growth and security, complemented by a new FM radio system broadcasting targeted promotions and music to enhance the shopping atmosphere.

Spar Market Crosshouse is a trailblazer in retail innovation, raising the bar for convenience stores. It leads the way with vibrant four-colour electronic shelf edge labels and dynamic digital rails, powered by AI-driven ordering systems like RELEX and real-time stock tracking via Newton Eye cameras. The store’s fresh food range and market-style displays emphasize local suppliers, while advanced communication tools, including Quail Digital headsets, boost efficiency and customer service making it a flagship model of modern, tech-savvy retail.
Tobacco Retailer of the Year
The Tobacco Retailer of the Year award goes to a retailer who demonstrates outstanding tobacco product knowledge and responsible marketing initiatives in their store.

Leith
A high-tech solution helps this store’s tobacco selection to stand out from amongst the crowd, with a vending machine style system that allows the retailer to control cigarette sales entirely from the till. All staff members need do is find the correct product on the system, hit the button and it will be automatically dispensed behind them. This piece of kit, which the store owner introduced himself, allows Day-Today Salamander Place’s tobacco range to stand out in the crowd.
KeyStore Cults
Aberdeen
Found in the small village just outside of Aberdeen city centre, KeyStore Cults remains a safe pair of hands for plenty of tobacco customers across the entire city. Catering to both the elderly locals around the store as well as those travelling from further afield, KeyStore Cults has developed a reputation as a store that can find whatever product or brand you are looking for in the tobacco section and all set at RRP. This approach ensures the store keeps its loyal customer base, whilst also introducing some new consumers to the Cults area.
Spar Greenock
Inverclyde
Generating sales from the tobacco section can be a tricky game for any retailer in the modern day, so it makes Spar Greenock’s monthly £30k average an incredible figure. This has been helped along by a knowledgeable manageress in the store who has taken Spar Greenock to new heights in the CJ Lang & Son company owned estate. In fact, it has now become the top performing store for the company in terms of tobacco sales across the whole of Scotland.
Entrepreneur Award
This award goes to an outstanding individual in Scottish independent retailing who shows entrepreneurial qualities, seeks new opportunities, works to achieve bold goals and delivers success. The winner of this award will be revealed at the Scottish Grocer Awards on 5th November 2025.
Industry Achievement Award
The Industry Achievement Award will recognise an individual who has made his or her mark and achieved outstanding success in Scotland’s convenience retail trade, for the benefit of all. The winner of this award will be revealed at the Scottish Grocer Awards on 5th November 2025.
