The top spirits
AS we will see as we look at the top 15s in a number of specific categories, spirits brands had a very up and down 2012 in the Nielsen figures.
Remember that inflation ran at around 4% for much of the year and that the Chancellor’s duty price escalator meant that alcohol products could be expected to see still steeper price increases. So a brand that put on say 5% would, in effect, be standing still.
But look at the variation. Russian Standard vodka which had grown by 23% in 2010 and by 32% in 2011 was up by a huge 58% in 2012.
Other spirits showing substantial growth included Bombay Sapphire, Courvoisier, Drambuie, Aberlour, Jagermeister, Highland Park, Greenall’s Original, Disaronno, Old Pulteney, Tanqueray, Chivas Regal, Balvenie and Jim Beam.
Spirits brands reported to have lost considerable sales in the Scottish off-trade in 2012 included High Commissioner and Glenfiddich 12-year-old.
